Green and gold for Phumzile
“The fact that I was out there playing for my country gave me a rush."
Crawford College North Coast grade 12 pupil Phumzile Shandu represented South Africa in the 2013 Action Netball Tri-Nations series at the Fourways Action Sports Arena.
The series began with the six-a-side leg of the tournament. The U18A ladies side played very well and achieved the Silver medal after beating the English three out of three times and beating the Australians two out of three times- narrowly losing the last game during the final 36-31.
The final saw South Africa take on the Australians once again. This match had spectators sitting at the edge of the seats for 50 solid minutes and ended bitterly for the South Africans with a score of 46-47 going the way of the Aussies.
Phumzile had the time of her life.
“The fact that I was out there playing for my country gave me a different sort of rush. Standing on the court just before the final shoulder-to-shoulder with nine other girls eager to do our country proud, singing the national anthem- I cannot say I did not have a lump in my throat. The feeling was overwhelming! It was the best tour of my life. I cannot wait for the next time I get to play for my country.”
