Another milestone was reached on September 23 when Ashton International College launched and affiliated the Ashton Swimming Academy under the leadership of sports and leadership director Dr André Barnard.
“It is with great excitement that this Academy has taken off to an excellent start, and boasting 35 registered members in only three weeks,” said Dr Barnard.
Registered swimming coach Garry Jackson was appointed as head coach but will also be responsible for Ashton’s first team swimming squads in both the junior and senior college.
“We have adopted the Sailfish as our logo and will be known as Sails, whilst the learn-to-swim programme will be called “Sailies”. The Sailies will train under the watchful eye of Liz Armitage,” he added.
Construction of a gym is almost complete and students are exposed to pilates twice a week before their swimming lessons.
“Most exciting is that we have top swimmers like Zoë Frank, holder of six national records, and national medallists Dylan Cox, Demi Jeffreys all swimming with the academy, as well as Tyler Mirtle who participated at level three and youth. A number of level one and two swimmers who competed at respective nationals will be nurtured to reach their full potential,” he added.
Ashton Swimming Academy is an open swimming club, not only for Ashton students. Potential members are invited to join by contacting Dr Barnard on sportacademy@ashtonballito.co.za, or contacting the club secretary, Jeannie Habig on marketing1@ashtonballito.co.za. Alternatively both Dr Barnard and Mrs Habig can be contacted on 032-946 2096.
Training takes place daily from 4pm to 6pm for the academy, and the Sailies will swim in the earlier time slots.
