Two hundred pupils took home trophies from the Fairbreeze Secondary School’s annual speech and award day held at Fairbreeze Madressa Hall on Friday January 24.
While other grades, from seven to 11, showed that they could also get distinctions, it was the 2013 matric class that collected most of the silverware.
“We wanted to go out in style and show the next group that it can be done,” said the school’s Dux Arjun Kumar Das Nandlal.
Nandlal also took home the highest aggregate award, the Hair Citi floating trophy for Afrikaans, the Ganas Naidoo Memorial Award for English, a Nitashini Raghunadan floating trophy for accounting as well as trophy for each of his seven distinctions.
The much contested good fellowship award went to Joy Bhodoza whose acceptance speech expressed her love for her school and sadness that she was leaving.
“My goodbye to you is to remember that you owe it to yourself not to leave this world with your story untold or song unsung,” said Bhodoza.
Other highlights of the event included grade 11 pupils cheering for their peer, Precise Mbense who took home six distinction trophies as well as an NG Govender floating trophy for life sciences and the best maths student award in the FET phase.
