The start of 2014 has been an exciting and successful story for sport at Ashton. The senior college first swimming team have won three of their league galas. The combined junior and senior team won the KICCSSA inter-schools gala convincingly on Valentine’s Day, beating second placed Grantleigh by almost 100 points, Richards Bay Christian College third, Creston College finished fourth , followed by Felixton – fifth, Wembley College sixth, Eden College eighth. Ashton swimmers Zoë Frank won junior victrix ludorum, Dylan Somerville clinched the junior victor ludorum and Tyler Mirtle was senior victrix ludorum.
Four of the senior college swimmers participated at the open water swimming nationals on Monday and Tuesday, with Cameron Pennell finishing a credible fifth overall in the event for men 12 and over (3km) and fourth in his age group, whilst Ruan Lotz finished seventh overall and was awarded the bronze medal for his age group.
Six girls have been selected for various KZN action netball teams : Demi Jefferys, Danelle van der Linde, Clare Evert, Carlea van der Linde, Gaby Schoeman, Paige McCallum, Tanielle McCallum and Alex Honneysett. The Karate Kids medalled in their KZN tournament and will now participate at nationals – well done to Dzemil Muric, Priyanka Govender and Tyla Vivela. All eyes will be on the three Ashton girls, Megan Bates, Kate Theunissen and Zoë Frank, who will be representing KZN next week at the SA lifesaving nationals in Bloemfontein. At the net, Megan Bates and Donica Brewer were selected for the U/19 Ethekwini Tennis team, whilst Pieter Steenkamp was selected for the Dolphin Coast tennis team.
