Pupils at R.A. Padayachee primary school were surprised last Friday when the Zimbali Rotary Club arrived with 480 new pairs of shoes for young feet.
As part of a project named “Tom’s Shoes” which has been running for three years and originated with the Rotary Club of Coronada, California; Zimbali Rotarians picked up the shoes from Port Elizabeth to donate them to the Shakas Head school.
“It was wonderful. We received hundreds of thank you letters afterwards from the children,” said project leader Hilary Hunter.
Hunter said the shoes that were too small went to KwaMama creche in Shakashead.
The project to date has given shoes to 43 000 children in South Africa.
