As South Africans around the country gathered to celebrate 20 years of democracy, pupils and teachers at Buffelsdale Primary School put on a spectacular show on Friday to mark this milestone.
Principal Mr Govender said the day involved an “edu-tainment” programme because they wanted it to be a celebration as well as pay homage to the fallen heroes and heroines.
“We have come so far as a country and we would not want to lose or misuse our great democracy. So it is important that we remind each other where we come from and share the dreams we have for our country going forward,” said Govender.
Missionaries, Elder Statson Palmer from the United States and Elder Dustin Macmillan from Canada visited the school to celebrate with them. They congratulated South Africans on having had a peaceful two decades of democracy.
They also addressed pupils on the dangers of unconsciously consuming media and entertainment.
“We are not saying that all media and entertainment is bad, but you need to start being proactive consumers. Use your knowledge to engage with and criticise the things that you consume,” said Palmer.
