Have you ever heard of a solar-powered computer lab?
If not, you should go to Zilungisele Primary School in Groutville to see it, as it is the only school in KZN to have one.
The lab was launched last Friday, by Hesto Harnesses in partnership with Samsung Electronics.
The R1.8 million lab is fitted inside a shipping container and was awarded to the school after Zilungisele was chosen from six schools in the Ilembe district to be the beneficiary.
Representing Hesto, advocate Sbu Ngcobo said of all the schools they visited, Zilungisele’s working relationship with their stakeholders was the best.
“We could not have asked for more. They were the right people to be awarded this resource,” he said.
Ngcobo also urged the community to assist security in protecting the lab against theft and vandalism.
“We want to help schools around our country by providing decent education and we need to start from primary level,” said Ngcobo.
On behalf of Samsung, Solomuzi Gigaba thanked Hesto for working with them on the project.
“Samsung would not have been able to this without Hesto’s help,” said Gigaba.
Gigaba also announced the company would open its first factory in South Africa, in KZN.
Home Affairs minister Malusi Gigaba, who is a former pupil of the school, was there to celebrate with them. He thanked the two companies for the wonderful project.
“This investment will take the school to a higher level,” said Gigaba.
