Curro pupil wins in India

Sport star rises above the rest in International Sports Olympiad Expo.

Grade 9 pupil of Curro Mount Richmore, Chantel van der Merwe recently attended the International Sports Olympiad Expo (ISOE) held last month in Lucknow, India. The athletics championship, which took place from October 25 to 28, had only two competing age-groups – U14 and U18, so the brave 15-year-old rising star had to take part in the U18 events.

There were 75 schools and over 2000 children competing from all over the world, so competition was exceptionally tough.

Taking this in her stride, Van der Merwe surged into third place in the 100 metre sprint and won herself a prestigious bronze medal. She also took part in the 200m sprint and placed fourth in the long jump event.

For her efforts and successes at the junior athletics meet, Van der Merwe received a trophy for the best disciplined athlete and also took home the beautiful Peacock Trophy for her participation in the Expo.
