Breakfast like a king for 3 local schools

Three North Coast schools won gifts valued at R15 000 for their first class participation in the Rama Good Breakfast Schools Program recently.

Out of the 360 schools across the Eastern Cape and KZN who took part, two Mandeni schools – Whebede Primary School and Evutha Primary School – and Magongolo Primary School in Ndwedwe were in the top 10.

This four-week behavior change programme taught pupils the importance and make-up of a nutritious breakfast through interactive classes, including a Breakfast Pledge and song, The Breakfast Beat, written by musician and Good Breakfast ambassador, ProVerb.

A recent study, commissioned by Unilever, found that 86% of children reported that eating breakfast before school helped them to concentrate better and 89% said that it gave them energy for the rest of the day.

The schools had to submit Good Breakfast Diaries that were completed by the pupils. The teachers also had to send photo and video report backs to show how they completed the programme each week in the classroom.

The cash prizes will be used to buy kitchen equipment to make sure the pupils have a nutritious breakfast every day at school. All participating schools were also rewarded with their own fridge.

Rama social mission brand manager of Unilever South Africa, Sasha Sathianathan, said they were impressed by the schools’ enthusiasm.

“We are very pleased with the way the schools and teachers have committed their time and energy to make it work. We are proud of the impact we have already made in our first year and are looking forward to reaching more learners with these valuable lessons,” said Sathianathan.
