The Ballito Junction regional mall invited local schools to take part in a competition decorating Christmas trees.
This was a decorating competition with a difference, as schools had to decorate them using recycled and handmade, re-purposed decorations.
Up for grabs were not only festive season bragging rights, but a very merry R10 000 in Ballito Junction gift cards.
The schools pulled out all the stops, but in the end it was the creative and unique approach by Shakaskraal Primary that saw them walk away with the winner’s laurels.
Junior primary teacher Jessica Nair, who was one of those behind the decorative ideas, said they were super thrilled to have won.
“All the trees looked like winners, so it was very exciting to emerge as the top choice, we put a lot of effort into our tree.
“Our Christmas message is the hope that we can be part of building a new generation of South Africans who do not carry the hurts of the past, but rather treasure our legacy while at the same time looking ahead to a bright future.”

Of course, it was not only tinsel and pine-needles that carried the Christmas cheer to shoppers.
Father Christmas himself was also on hand to meet and greet some of his eager young fans and hear all about what they wished for this year.
