A township girl, Nomalanga Langa (17), from Hambanathi was named the top pupil against adversity in the Pinetown district.
She was also Protec (the Programme for Technological Careers supported by Tongaat Hulett) Tongaat’s top pupil bagging eight distinctions with 93 percent for mathematics and 95% for physical science.
The non-profit educational support celebrated with jubilation as their matric class once again obtained a 100 percent pass and 94% bachelor pass.
The 32 pupils achieved a total of 70 subject distinctions, including three distinctions in maths, four in physical science and eight in English.

Langa said her result did not come as a surprise to her, but to be named the top pupil in the district was furthest from her expectations.
“It calls for dedication and being sure of what you want.
“I wanted to do actuarial sciences, so I had to add accounting as an additional subject and I am so happy that my dream of passing all my subjects with distinctions came true,” said Langa.

She said her success came with a price tag of adding five hours of study after school, attending weekend classes and studying previous examination papers.
“I had very limited time with my friends unless we were studying together. I also cut down time that I spent on my cell phone. I always made time to sleep and going for a run every morning, just to calm my mind.”
She praised Protec for the support offered to them as pupils and said it made a huge difference.
“If I did not understand anything at school, Nkosibomvu Secondary School, I would get help at Protec. We were also given career guidance,” said Langa.
Other star pupils were Noluthando Luthuli, Pride Mcunu, Minenhle Mchunu, Lisakhanya Mnyameni and Nomfundo Ngobese who all obtained five distinctions and Simone Singh with four distinctions.
