Maphumulo matrics set the benchmark for Ilembe

"Going forward we must ensure that we give them the necessary support they need."

Maphumulo mayor, Matozi Khuzwayo Dlamini, gave the matric class of 2019 a target of an 80% pass rate this year, which is a 4% increase from the 76% pass obtained by the class of 2018.

Dlamini was speaking at her mayoral breakfast and matric awards held at the Maphumulo Town Hall last Thursday.

Maphumulo came out as the top municipality in Ilembe for matric results and she urged them not to allow this to change in the coming year.

“Despite some of the schools facing challenges they managed to produce outstanding results and that should be celebrated.

“Going forward we must ensure that we give them the necessary support they need.”

Inhlokozi High School and Ndukende Secondary were named the two best performing schools with 100% pass rates and Simlindile Myeza from Vukile High School bagged the award for the best performing pupil. Myeza took home seven A’s out of eight subjects and she was awarded a laptop and tablet.

Maphumulo’s top ten pupils the mayor, councillors and representatives from the teacher’s unions.

The municipality will be paying her university registration fee, along with the other top ten pupils.

The 17-year-old walked to the stage to accept her award with her mother, both crying tears of joy. Inhlokozi High School principal Siyabonga Dhlomo said the school’s secret lies in extra classes and networking with other schools in Maphumulo.

“We have extra classes from 7am in the morning and from 3pm to 5pm seven days a week.

“Teachers are always working closely with the pupils ensuring that they revise past papers,” said Dhlomo.
