Bucket loads of Mandela Day kindness

Started in March, the school has through its 'Ashton Families Who Care' initiative distributed more than 13 000 food parcels, each enough to feed a family for an entire month.

Every day should be Mandela Day.

This is the message Ashton International College Ballito is sending out, saying that people now more than ever need all the help they can get, especially in the grip of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Started in March, the school has through its ‘Ashton Families Who Care’ initiative distributed more than 13 000 food parcels, each enough to feed a family for an entire month.

On July 1, another initiative called ‘God’s 7 Month Plan’ was launched to ensure that 1 000 parcels continue to be sent out. Businesses continue to help fund the initiative.

Asthon marketing manager Jeannie Habig says: “Ashton families who continue to generously donate to the fund, as well as donations from our community who place the items in the trolley at Tiffany’s and collection boxes at Ashton have been remarkable.

“We also want to thank His Way Outreach – Jacqui Muir and her team – for the distributions and Grace Family Church Ballito for their amazing support. We wish God’s richest blessings on you all.”

Students were also challenged at the start of lockdown to use their time wisely.

They have since knitted and crocheted teddie bears, blankets and beanies, all of which were distributed last weekend by Rouxle Johnson and Miss Ballito, Juliana Huisaman.

The items, including food parcels, were donated to Summerhill House and Haven of Rest.

“As we said, every day is Mandela Day, and 100 beautifully made masks were donated earlier this month to assist in opening neighbouring schools to meet the requirements needed to re-open these schools safely for education.”

The Smaldon Family did the LINC Love Week 5km fun walk which took 67 minutes and all proceeds went towards LIV Village.

Two of Ashton’s artists also portrayed their own feelings on Mandela Day, and Liam Nicholls from the Foundation Phase did a very inspiring Rainbow Nation piece of art.
