Only 13 of the more than 100 schools in the Ilembe region achieved a 100% pass rate in the 2020 matric exams that were released last Tuesday.

But despite the Ilembe matric pass rate dropping from 80.9% to 76.9%, only 9 schools received a pass rate of less than 50% pass rate.

The lowest was Qwabe Secondary School from Maphumulo with 26.1%.

Of the district’s 7 596 matric pupils only 6 835 wrote the exams and 5 255 passed their matric this year.

One school that did well was Qoqulwazi Secondary school in Driefontein.

Qoqulwazi Secondary school matrics Qhawekazi Bhanya (left) and Aphiwe Mtintwa are delighted with their results.

The school achieved 86,1% raising the bar from the 74% pass rate of 2019.

The school’s top achiever was Nokwanda Mkhumbuzi with distinctions in accounting, economics and life orientation, while Sthandiwe Mhlongo achieved distinctions in Isizulu and Life Orientation.

They both attributed their success to hard work as well as their dedicated teachers who taught in the afternoons, weekends, holidays and at night.

The district education department did not respond to requests for comment.
