Ballito Junction helps feed a thirst for knowledge at Sizani Combined School

Thanks to the collective effort of Salt Rock ward councillor, Privi Makhan and an ongoing initiative by Ballito Junction, the Salt Rock-based school's pupils will now not go hungry come Saturdays, when pupils attend special reading classes aimed at improving their English.

Grade 4 pupils at Sizani Combined School have been given more than 70 packets of nutritious porridge to keep them learning-fit.

Thanks to the collective effort of Salt Rock ward councillor, Privi Makhan and an ongoing initiative by Ballito Junction, the Salt Rock-based school’s pupils will now not go hungry come Saturdays, when pupils attend special reading classes aimed at improving their English.

Pupils are taught in isiZulu until the end of Grade 3, when they transition over to English as a learning medium.

Many pupils struggle to adapt.

As a result, the school started special English reading sessions on Saturdays during which pupils are able to enjoy nutritious meal – something many do not have the luxury of at home.

According to principal Ntombenhle July, donations for these meals have run low.

“A healthy body, is a healthy mind,” said the principal, who stressed the importance of the meals for the pupils.

Principal July thanked councillor Makhan and Ballito Junction’s property manager, Ronica Inarman and marketing manager, Sashena Ramparsad.

“Thank you very much. You do not know how much you have helped us today. These meals will go a long way to feeding our pupils,” she said.

Sizani Combined School is but one of several schools which have to date benefited from meal donations as part of an ongoing campaign by Ballito Junction.
