At the annual prestigious Eskom Expo for Young Scientists ISF, selected students from 35 expo regions in South Africa compete against the best young scientists from around the country and around the world.

Anton Lembede Academy Principal, Dumisani Sibaya said Bonolo and Anathi designed a mechanism to power street lights as their project of choice.

“The innovative skills which they provided in their project prototype helped them emerge as gold medalists in this international event,” said Sibaya.

Solutions to current electrical generation issues faced across South Africa are substantially addressed in their massive project.

“Their creative genius beyond the classroom’s walls was portrayed with refined ideas and imagination put into reality.”

The Academy hopes to realise its vision of developing well-rounded, confident and responsible individuals who aspire to achieve their full potential, and is an idea driven and shared by the school’s staff.

Anton Lembede Academy is a pilot project with a unique curriculum focusing on Mathematics, Science and Technology. It was built on the site of the old La Mercy Primary school at a cost of R252-million. It opened in February this year.
