Competing in the South African finals of the Tournament of Minds, Crawford International North Coast College pupils brought home gold and a number of certificates.
Held in mid-October, the tournament is an international education initiative for primary and secondary school pupils aimed at stimulating creative thinking.
Participants are encouraged to solve authentic, open-ended challenges that promote diverse thinking, at the same time developing collaborative teamwork.
Challenges range from arts, languages, literature and social sciences to subjects such as Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
Crawford’s Team 1, made up of Akwande Nzama, Sbonga Ntombela, Skyla Tyack, Mikara Govender, Nothando Mdletshe, Daisy Pybus and Estere Kafela, claimed the top honours in the high school language/literature category.
“The Tournament of Minds is designed to stimulate a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning, using pupils’ existing knowledge, skills and understanding to solve unique problems. In 2021, owing to Covid-19 restrictions, pupils had to submit a 10-minute video in which their team demonstrated an innovative solution to a set challenge through critical and creative thinking. A live, spontaneous online challenge was issued as well,” said Crawford head of marketing and admissions, Debra Wagner.
The remaining 4 Crawford teams were each awarded honours certificates for scoring close to the winning total.
