Groutville High super matriculant motivated by desire to buy his gogo a house

The 18-year-old bagged 8 As and hopes to become a medical doctor.

“I want to build my gogo a nice, big house.”

That was Groutville High School’s top achiever Mzwandile Duvane’s key motivation when he was studying for his matric examinations.

And not only did he pass his matric with flying colours, he bagged a whopping 8 distinctions to boot.

Duvane is now gearing up to pursue a medical degree at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

Groutville High School principal Simphiwe Gumede congratulates top achiever Mzwandile Duvane.

The 18-year-old said he knew the only thing that would help him fulfil his childhood dream of becoming a medical doctor and building his grandmother a home, was to study hard.

He lives with his grandmother, mother, uncle and nephew in a mud house in the Mnyundwini area in Groutville.

“I won’t lie, it was hard. No one at home is employed and we all depend on my granny’s old age pension.

“Sometimes when it was raining I had to stop studying because of the leaking roof, but instead of losing my self-esteem and feeling sorry for myself, I used the challenges as extra motivation to work even harder. The first step was to pass matric,” said Duvane.

He earned distinctions in Zulu (88%), English (85%), mathematics (82%), life sciences (90%), physical sciences (81%), dramatic arts (84%), life orientation (91%) and geography (82%).

Groutville High obtained a 92.6% pass rate, a 10% increase compared to its 2020 results.

Principal Simphiwe Gumede said he was stunned by the performance of the class of 2021.

“We owe it all to our educators and learners who worked without respite from the beginning of the year up until the writing of the first paper. Next year we hope to improve the results to between 95% and 100%. We are reaching for the stars,” said Gumede.

Other top achievers from the school were Nosipho Masinga and Khanyisile Somi, who each earned 6 distinctions, while Rosena Mhlongo, Awande Gama and Mandisa Msweli bagged 5 each.
