Tongaat Child Welfare target drug abuse issue in schools

Many parents and families have reported struggling to cope with the unruly behaviour of their children because of drug addiction.

In response to the increasing number of drug abuse cases in schools, Tongaat Child Welfare Society recently presented a two day awareness workshop involving 60 pupils of six secondary schools in Tongaat.

South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (SANCA) representative Sthembiso Mdlanzi provided training and focused on the effects of drugs, the three types of drugs commonly used and how they are misused.

Tongaat Child Welfare secretary and representative of the Tongaat Anti-Drug Forum (TADF), Clyde Pillay, spoke on how drug abuse was affecting the community, while Haven of Rest social worker Sushie Govender outlined the services the facility offered residents.
