Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School prioritises character building
The school's wish is that parents allow their daughters to learn about life, through their own experiences, just as they did.
The educational ethos at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) mirrors what the great Martin Luther King Jr once said: “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education.”
That is the school’s goal.
What is offered and taught in the classroom, on the sport field, through music and cultural interaction, reading and books – and through success and failure – spark intelligence and the wisdom which builds true character.
When girls leave GHS at the end of their matric year with a questioning mind and confidence in their ability, the influence they can have on those with whom they will work or study should be significant.
The school’s wish is that parents allow their daughters to learn about life, through their own experiences, just as they did.
There is an increasing tendency for parents to do everything for their daughters. Both the parent and the teacher, remember that building character is as important as fostering the development of intelligence.
This is the 102nd year since GHS was founded.
This great school has represented excellence in education for girls since 1920.
The school’s mission continues to be the pursuit of excellence, and every day GHS challenges each girl to be the best that she can possibly be.
As a leading school for girls, both academically and extramurally, GHS is delighted to offer learners the opportunity to experience the indomitable Girls’ High ethos of Cheerfulness with Industry.
Meet the GHS Principal – Andrew Graaf

In 2018 Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (GHS) welcomed its first male principal, Andrew Graaf.
The 12th principal of GHS, Mr Graaf returns to his hometown.
He grew up in Scottsville, attended Pelham Primary and matriculated in 1980 from Alexandra High, to where he returned in 1998 as deputy principal and became principal in 2008.
In 2015, Mr Graaf was appointed principal of Northlands Girls’ High in Durban North.
He embraced the special place that all-girls education holds and has attended many conferences on all-girls education.
“Having grown up in Pietermaritzburg, I know GHS has always been a venerable institution in the city. Being given the opportunity to head and serve it is both humbling and very exciting,” he said.
