Shakaskraal ballerinas shine on stage

Despite a few obstacles along the way, most of the group who started have come forward in leaps and bounds since the Courier first visited in March.

Shakaskraal SA Primary School’s little ballerinas brought Christmas cheer to their exciting final recital.

Drawing on a year of ballet tuition, 31 of the 56 Grade 1 dancers put on a show for their parents on December 9 with the audience impressed by the level of talent and skill.

The group were the first beneficiaries of a programme at the school started by Simbithi resident Gail Stefano, with coaching offered by qualified teacher Caroline Brymer.

Despite a few obstacles on the way, most of the group that started have come forward in leaps and bounds since the Courier first visited in March.

The children were thrilled with their donated goodie bags to end the recital.

“We are really proud of the girls and you can see how happy they are to be performing. We think it is so important to give young children access to cultural activities like this,” said Stefano.

The 56 young girls were split into two groups, each getting one day of ballet tuition a week on site at the school.

The first year of ballet at the school proved hugely successful and Stefano is hopeful that it will return in 2023.

All of their leotards, shoes and end-of-year gifts were donated by members of the Ballito and Salt Rock communities, which ensured the kids had the best chance to excel on stage.

“There are too many donors to thank individually, but we really do appreciate it. Every little bit makes a huge difference at the school,” said Stefano.
