Protec Tongaat needs your support to help teach pupils

Protec Tongaat is a career enrichment programme which promotes math, science and technological literacy for pupils from grade 10-12.

The Protec career enrichment facility in Tongaat is appealing for support to help with the provision of an air-conditioner for their office and a data projector for online classes.

Branch manager Marion Takis said the air-conditioner used over the past 25 years is no longer repairable.

“The heat these days makes it almost impossible to work. Because of burglar guards we cannot even open windows, so there is no ventilation. We have to soldier on, but it makes it very difficult to work,” said Takis.

She said the data projector used over the past 12 years is also out of order.

“We need it for our international computer driving licence (ICDL) training and screening of online classes. We do these classes every week and without the projector it becomes problematic to host these.”

The Protec programme promotes maths, science and technological literacy for pupils in grades 10, 11 and 12.

About 120 school pupils from rural areas and townships across the North Coast benefit from Protec’s resources.

Protec recently achieved a 100% matric pass rate, with 97% of its pupils qualifying for Bachelor’s degree enrolment.

Thirty-four pupils obtained a total of 96 subject distinctions, including six distinctions in mathematics, seven in physical science and nine in English.

As a non-profit organisation, they are entirely reliant on donations.
