Chess stars shine on national stage

The trio impressed with their tactical nous and endgame efficiency against some of the best young players in the country.

Three future iLembe chess grandmasters recently played their way to top 10 positions in the country.

Logan Krimm (Umhlali Prep, 6th), Asher Ellender (Ashton International College Ballito, 9th) and Mawande Mpanza (Darnall Primary, 10th) all competed in the U8 category of the South African Junior Chess Competition (SAJCC), held in Johannesburg from March 30 to April 4.

The trio impressed with their tactical nous and endgame efficiency against some of the best young players in the country.

The SAJCC gave entrants an opportunity to earn qualification spots for the Junior Commonwealth Games, which will be held in Trinidad and Tobago in August.

All three iLembe players did so and will now await team selection as they continue to hone their skills in preparation.
