Reddam pupils captivate with ‘Our Town’
The three-act play, spaced a few years apart, follows relationships and changes in the town and its people.
It was all high drama and heart as Reddam House Ballito presented its second college production with Our Town from 18 to 20 April.
Our Town was created by American playwright Thornton Wilder in 1938.
Described by American playwright Edward Albee as “the greatest American play ever written”, it presents the fictional American town of Grover’s Corners between 1901 and 1913 through the everyday lives of its citizens.
It is essentially a play about appreciating the value of life itself.
The Metatheatre-styled play uses minimal scenery and props to explore the relationship between two young Grover’s Corners neighbours, George Gibbs, played by James Davison (Grade 12), and Emily Webb, played by Ammara Mahomed (Grade 12).
The three-act play, spaced a few years apart, follows relationships and changes in the town and its people. This is all told by the stage manager who was played by Alex Tennent (Grade 9).
The production was said to present incredibly talented actors who were able to skilfully capture the raw emotion of the play.
The director, Tayla Glasspool, in the programme urged audiences to not allow life to pass us by too quickly as we live in an age where we are so absorbed by technology and social media.
Her lasting message was, as she quoted from the play text: “We need to make sure that we don’t spend our lives moving about in a cloud of ignorance, and blindness. Let’s look at one another.”
