Crawford impresses with ‘Irrelevant’ production
To single anyone out is almost unfair, given the ability of each cast member to exhibit memorable and distinct personality traits that stood out in the shuffle.
Irrelevant in name alone, Crawford International North Coast College’s senior production wowed audiences over its week-long run last week.
Written and directed by the school’s drama teacher, Melissa Wood, Irrelevant saw a cast of 19 pulling off the risky highwire act of a comedy.
Comedy can be hit-or-miss for even the most seasoned of performers, but it proved no issue for the talented high school cast who turned out as patients in a mental institution.
We follow the group of misfits as they travel through their delusions over the course of a week, searching for exits, planning escapes and generally confusing each other along the way.
Of particular note was the hilarious Ziyanda Mkhize as ‘Unicorn-Person Rubinator’, a floatie-bedecked patient who had more screws loose than those left in.
But to single anyone out is almost unfair, given the ability of each cast member to exhibit memorable and distinct personality traits that stood out in the shuffle.
This was thanks in no small part to the quality of Wood’s writing, imbued with endless laugh lines and emotional punch.
“We began casting for this show about two years ago. It has been a journey and a half, but finally we have made Irrelevant completely relevant!” said Wood.
Aside from the acting, there were three dance interludes – choreographed by Natashia Hooman-Roets – which proved to be propulsive energy-builders for the audience over the almost two-hour runtime.
The show had been a long time coming for executive head Vernon David, who had not been able to hold a production under his tenure since 2019 given Covid-19 pressures.
“We are of course proud of our reputation as an academically strong school, but the cultural abilities of our pupils deserve recognition. The show was truly fantastic and I look forward to seeing what Mrs Wood comes up with next year!” said David.
Unfortunately for those who missed it, the production ended last Friday, so be sure to keep an eye out next year.
