Belverton brainiacs hold all the cards

Tongaat’s Belverton Secondary School blew through the competition at the recent 2023 Mind Blown League Tournament.

The final league event drew 24 school teams from across the province who had been whittled down in competitions since August.

Finalists converged at the King’s Club at Kingsmead Cricket Stadium on December 2.

Mind Blown is an educational card game that ties into the school curriculum for grades four through 12.

The game is typically played via a mobile app where players can collect more than 1 000 unique in-game cards which they can use to build their deck and compete against others.

All cards carry scientifically accurate information and are used to promote literacy and STEM interest in children who are likely playing games on their phones in any case.

As one progresses through Mind Blown one can earn the in-game currency, Sparx, which can also be claimed via real life activities such as beach clean-ups and waste audits.

In the tournament version however, players teamed up in pairs and played the special Guardians of Gaia Island deck which tested their ability to strategise on the fly.

Belverton’s team reigned supreme and claimed the senior title.

Such was the popularity of the event that 100 schools have registered their interest for next year’s league.
