American International School of Jeddah bridges cultures by uplifting rural school in Darnall

School tour to the North Coast became a memorable journey as pupils immersed themselves in local culture.

A group of pupils from the American International School of Jeddah recently enjoyed the North Coast as the setting for their South African adventure.

The Saudi Arabian school’s tour from January 19-26 gave children and staff alike a chance to submerse themselves in our local culture and make friendships across continents.

While staying at Sugar Bay Holiday Resort in Zinkwazi, the AIS Jeddah complement enjoyed a bush experience at Phezulu Safari Park, water park fun at uShaka Marine World and an outreach day at Bongimfundo Primary School in Darnall.

For many, the chance to meet like-minded children from the other side of the world at Bongimfundo proved the highlight of the trip.

Pupils shared cultural experiences from their respective communities and got a feel for what daily life was like in both countries.

It was smiles all round as the pupils had a chance to interact.

AIS Jeddah also made a R30 000 donation to Bongimfundo, while helping to repair critical school infrastructure, install security cameras and provide stationery hampers for the 2024 school year.

Sugar Bay is an American-style summer camp which offers a getaway for children aged 7-17.
