Ashton Ballito girls display grit and grace on the cricket field, despite tough match against Felixton
Felixton College senior girl's 1st team beat Ashton College by nine wickets in their T20 cricket match in Ballito last week.

Felixton Girls 1st XI (89/1) beat Ashton International College Ballito Senior Girls 1st XI (87/8) by nine wickets in their T20 match at Cambridge Field on Friday.
Felixton’s impressive batting saw the visitors claim a comfortable win against Ashton, who won the previous fixture between the schools in October. The visitors chased down the target in quick time, knocking off the 88 runs in just 65 balls at 8.20 runs an over.

Playing in front of some vocal home support, opening batter, S’mangaliso Mjadu, powered Felixton to victory with some destructive power-hitting, bringing up an unbeaten half-century off 38 balls at a strike rate of 131.50.
She struck seven fours and two sixes, including a game-winning boundary to go to 50, as the Empangeni school chased down the target inside 11 overs. Mjadu, who also opened the bowling, took 2 for 13 in four overs to cap a superb all-round display.
Lexi van der Merwe added 23 runs off 25 balls as the pair put on 87 from just 59 balls for the second wicket to win the game. Daniella Burgess was the pick of Felixton’s bowlers, claiming 2 for 10 in three overs.

Earlier, Felixton won the toss and elected to bowl. Ashton made 87/8 in their 20 overs. Opening batter, Delyni Venter, carried her bat, top scoring with 24 not out. She struck three boundaries in her 45-ball innings at a strike rate of 53.30.
After the match, the ‘spirit of cricket’ shone through. Despite the defeat, Ashton pupils celebrated with Mjuda, taking group selfies in the middle of the pitch, as they congratulated the all-rounder for her wonderful performance.

Girls’ cricket is growing in South Africa, particularly in KZN and on the North Coast.
Ashton Ballito began playing inter-school cricket last year and the sport is proving popular among the pupils.
There is no match this coming week.
