Curro Salt Rock held a successful first-ever junior 7s rugby festival on Friday to kickstart the new rugby season.

The school welcomed Crawford North Coast, Werda Primary School from Queensburgh and Atholton Primary School from Umhlanga to the campus.

Wet weather and muddy fields greeted coaches, parents and kids from the four schools. Despite the conditions, Curro went unbeaten, winning both U11 matches and all three first team fixtures.

Curro primary school head of sport, Phelelani Mtembu, praised the rugby players for competing in good spirits and the coaches and parents for making the tournament a hit.

“Despite the weather, we made it happen! Our first 7s Rugby Festival was a success, with U11 and U13 teams showcasing their skills,” he said.

Curro’s U11s scored 75 points across their two games, conceding one try, while the first team notched 130 points without reply in their three matches to cap a fantastic day for the North Coast school’s junior sevens program.

“I want to say thank you to our coaches and parents for giving our learners the chance to shine. We are working with an incredible generation that is talented and passionate about sports,” added Mtembu.

“No players complained about the conditions of the pitches. Instead, they were excited to play rugby. At Curro, we are beginning the building of a solid sports structure, and the future is bright.”
