School recycling champions, superheroes and scientists

Catch up on another busy week of school news on the North Coast.

North Coast pupils have enjoyed a busy few weeks – read on for a snapshot of some of their projects and events.

Green champions!

Isnembe Secondary School in Tongaat emerged as KwaZulu-Natal’s top green champion in The Glass Recycling Company’s (TGRC) 2024 Annual Schools Recycling Competition.

The school collected 26 846 kilograms of glass, the highest total in the province, earning them a R30000 cash prize.

The initiative, which saw schools from four provinces collect more than 400 tonnes of glass – equivalent to over 1.2-million bottles and jars – demonstrates the power of collective action. All collected glass will be recycled without losing quality, proving that every bottle counts toward a greener future.

Isnembe Secondary pupils claimed the top honours at this year’s recycling competition.

“Glass is a shining example of circular sustainability – infinitely recyclable, endlessly valuable,” said TGRC CEO, Shabeer Jhetam.

“These schools are setting the standard for what it means to protect our environment and embed green thinking into everyday life.”

Sweet school excursion

Crawford International North Coast Grade 9 pupils recently explored science and business studies with a field trip to Sezela Sugar Mill, south of Durban.

This experience saw pupils observing everything from the chemical processes involved in sugar production, to exploring innovative practices like ash-to-brick treatment, pentosan extraction and alcohol fuel production.

Spidermen!

Zeeshan Rehaman, Evan Singh and Zethembiso Nkosi made a great impression during Crawford International’s North Coast Pre-Primary Slipper Day, proudly dressed in matching Spiderman onesies.
