Ashton sevens competition draws great rugby for a good cause
For every try Ashton scored, the school donated R1 000 to Summerhill House.
Ashton International College Ballito hosted an action-packed weekend of sevens rugby, combining fierce competition with much-appreciated charity fundraising.
After two days of action on Cambridge Field, Ashton raised R24 000 for Summerhill House, a home for orphaned and abandoned children in Etete.

The tournament, which drew schools from across KZN, saw Ashton’s 1st team finish third in the U18 division after a hard-fought semi-final loss to eventual champions Clifton College Durban. Ashton’s U15 team placed seventh in their division.
Despite not taking home any silverware, Ashton made a significant impact off the field. For every try scored by their teams, R1 000 was donated to Summerhill House – resulting in a remarkable R21 000 raised through five-pointers alone.

“It was a tremendous honour to host this tournament again, raising funds for Summerhill House for the fourth year running,” said Craig Currin, head of senior college sport at Ashton.
The U18 competition featured top schools including Clifton College Durban, Grantleigh, Curro Hillcrest, Hillcrest High School, Kloof High School, Kingsway High School, Riverwood College, Wembley College and St Henry’s Marist College.
The U15 tournament welcomed Richem Secondary and Hoërskool Suid-Natal alongside Ashton and others.

Clifton College lifted the U18 Cup, while Riverwood College and St Henry’s claimed the Plate and Bowl respectively. In the U15 division, St Henry’s emerged victorious with the Cup, Richem took the Plate and Kloof secured the Bowl.
“I am grateful for every team that participated and for using their God-given talents for a cause greater than just playing the game,” said Currin.
