KwaDukuza kids ready to code against international competition
Three local schools qualified for the Tangible World Cup later this month.
Three KwaDukuza schools are ready to represent South Africa in coding and robotics at the international Tangible World Cup later this month.
The virtual event will see 48 South African teams take on schools from 25 countries on September 30. Among the local contingent are Stanger Manor Primary School, Stanger Manor Secondary School and Mbekamuzi Secondary School who qualified through strong performances at the national Tangible Africa tournament.
Stanger Manor Primary’s Grade 7 team claimed first place in the primary school division, while Stanger Manor’s high school teams grabbed second and third in the Grade 9 and 8 age categories. Mbekamuzi Secondary’s Grade 11 team earned third-place in the Grade 10-12 event.
Dr Mogambal Moonsamy, convenor of coding and robotics and the young scientist expo for the iLembe district, said she was excited to see the teams in action.
“They have made their parents, teachers, the district, the province and myself incredibly proud. iLembe is the only district with four teams securing podium positions at nationals. I can’t express this feeling in words,” she said.
Tangible Africa is an initiative of Nelson Mandela University and the Leva Foundation, based in Gqeberha, which promotes 21st-century skills through learning by play.
As the teams prepare to represent their country on the international stage, they are appealing for sponsorship of team uniforms, including caps, T-shirts and tracksuits. Those interested in supporting the teams can contact Moonsamy at 084 951 6025.
