Maphumulo’s Joel Primary celebrates Arbour Month with garden planting

KZN legislature deputy-speaker Mmabatho Tembe was in attendance to break ground.

Tree talk and environmental education were on the menu as Maphumulo’s Joel Primary School celebrated the start of Arbour Month on September 9.

The school welcomed KZN legislature deputy-speaker, Mmabatho Tembe, who encouraged pupils to take an active role in protecting their natural surroundings. She marked the school’s celebrations with a tree-planting ceremony and the establishment of a vegetable garden.

Tembe highlighted the growing dangers posed by climate change, including the recent floods that decimated parts of the province. She emphasised that small actions, like planting indigenous trees and plants, could have a massive impact in protecting against erosion and helping to support local wildlife.

Joel Primary pupils ended the day by joining in on the planting fun and getting familiar with the vegetable garden, which they will help to oversee.
