Guzana Secondary needs help to restart vegetable garden after crop theft

Pupils, staff and volunteers have already cleared the garden, which was formerly a crucial community lifeline.

Nkobongo’s Guzana Secondary School pupils are appealing for seeds to revive the school’s vegetable garden after thieves stole its crops and the garden was abandoned late last year.

Determined to rebuild, pupils and staff have cleared the now overgrown patch and are preparing it for planting, but they need community support. Donations of seeds, fencing, spades, watering cans, fertiliser, ground cloth and tools would be welcomed.

Learner support agent Thembelihle Khanyile said the garden had previously been a lifeline for vulnerable families in the community.

“When the garden was functional, a pupil would come to me and say they did not have something to eat and we would harvest vegetables for them to carry home,” she said.

“We need these donations to continue the fight against hunger, while also teaching pupils how to earn a living, support their families, start businesses and help eliminate social ills.”

In a heartfelt letter to Simbithi resident Karenne Jo Bloomgarden (a retired teacher and education advocate), who previously helped them establish the garden, pupils pledged their commitment to restoring it.

“It’s not more of a wish but rather a need,” they wrote.

The children emphasised that many of their peers come from needy families and the garden could play a vital role in improving lives.

“We can improve a lot of lives and lend a helping hand to those who need it, including members of the community,” they wrote.

“The purpose of our garden is to give our fellow students a healthy way of living and to improve their valuable lives.”

To contribute, Bloomgarden has set up a collection point at Woody’s at the Brettenwood clubhouse.
