Historic win for Ashton’s golfers at KZN Nomads Schools Championships
The first team beat Westville Boys by one shot at Umhlali Country Club.
Ashton International College Ballito’s 1st golf team became the only co-ed school in history to win the KZN Nomads Schools Championships earlier this month.
The two-round, 36-hole tournament, held at Umhlali Country Club on March 2, saw Ashton (+39) edge out Westville Boys’ High School (+40) by a single shot in a tightly contested finish.
The triumph also earned the North Coast school qualification for the prestigious GolfRSA Schools National Championship, set to take place later this year at Umhlali CC, with the final date still to be confirmed.
Each team was made up of four players, with the top three scores counting toward the overall tally. Ashton’s winning line-up featured captain Callan Oldreive and Dylan Bezuidenhout (both Grade 11) and Matthew Smith and Kyle Waller (both Grade 10). Vice-captain Cameron Eager (Grade 11) competed individually to earn points toward KZN representation.

Callan and Matthew both delivered standout performances, finishing in a tie for third place overall after shooting 13 over par across two rounds. Dylan (+15) and Kyle (+22) finished tied eighth and twentieth, respectively.
“Playing in the KZN Nomads School Tournament was an honour, especially to be a part of such incredible team. I’m extremely proud of our performance and grateful to be their captain,” said Callan.
“The conditions made it extremely tough for all competitors, but our resilience and determination resulted in us holding our nerve and clinching the title.”
Ashton’s head of sport, Craig Currin, praised the young golfers for their composure and grit.
“It is a phenomenal accomplishment for our team,” he said.
“I’m extremely proud of the boys in the way they held their composure and how they fought to gain the title against the best schools in KZN.”
