Siza Water hosts educational Water Week programme for local schools

The programme highlighted water scarcity and the ways pupils could make a positive difference.

Pupils from seven local schools gathered for the 2026 National Water Week programme in Ballito last week, where they learned practical ways to conserve water and protect the environment.

Hosted by Siza Water, the programme focused on water conservation, pollution prevention and environmental responsibility.

Opening the event, company customer services manager Nigel Kaligan reminded pupils that everyone has a role to play, as polluted water affects both the environment and human health. He encouraged simple actions such as reducing plastic use, recycling and using water wisely, adding that pupils are future custodians who can influence others.

Bridget Ringdahl from One Planet addressing school pupils.

An educational session by Bridget Ringdahl from One Planet highlighted global water scarcity. She explained that although the Earth has abundant water, only 3% is freshwater, with a limited amount available for human use. South Africa, she added, receives less rainfall than the global average.

Pupils also learned how water is treated before reaching homes, including sedimentation, filtration and disinfection, as well as key causes of pollution such as litter, sewage, oil spills and plastic waste.

Nduduzo Shezi from Tinley Manor Primary.

A highlight was the eco-brick activity, where pupils filled plastic bottles with non-biodegradable waste to create reusable building blocks. Each school contributed 20 eco-bricks, totalling 140, which can be used to build benches and gardens.

The day ended with an “Amazing Race” challenge, featuring tasks like identifying leaks, estimating water use and cleaning a beach. A quiz added to the learning experience.

The Blue Sharks team emerged as overall winners after a close competition.
