Once again as the winter progresses and the worry of our water problems increases another insidious scourge emerges from the lack of vegetation.
Our town – Ballito and for that matter the whole country – is scattered with litter. I surmise it is from lack of pride, discipline or education. Litter is a serious worldwide problem but other countries such as Singapore have stringent laws and fines which are ENFORCED.
I have taken a picture of litter lying in Leonora Drive just as an example. The prospects of this being cleared is minimal as our municipality seems to only keep the beach areas clean. The whole of Ballito, the roads leading into the town and the M4 are a disgrace. The notion that it is alright to litter as it provides employment to people who will clean up is a fallacy.
In the past residents and owners of properties kept their pavements clean but this practice seems to have dwindled. Pavements are strewn with plastic, bottles and cans. The lack of municipal cleaners leaves the litter to accumulate. We will eventually drown in our own filth. The litter from the informal settlements along the M4 will eventually be strewn along and on the M4 if there is not a clean-up.
Would it not be a pleasure to live in a litter free society?
