Time for more extreme measures?
Being that our water is expected to run dry by August, I am puzzled by the lack of more extreme measures. “Please cooperate and use 50% less water” falls mostly on deaf ears, unfortunately. “Please cooperate and use 50% less water” falls mostly on deaf ears, unfortunately. How many fines have been handed out during our lengthy water restriction period? I don’t think anyone I know, or anyone they know has been given a fine (aside from the famous fining of the fire station), but I see infractions every day.
One big, unnecessary use of water that comes to mind are the several car washes in the area, using untold amounts of potable water each and every day. If put to the choice between a clean car or water in their home, I think it safe to say people would choose the latter.
The people who operate the car washes need to feed their families . . .however I wonder how business will be when the water is gone altogether? Personally I would rather see them subsidized from taxpayer money than waste our failing water supply.

Sembcorp Siza Water CEO Shyam Misra replies: There have been more fines than just the one for the fire station. When we are invoicing consumers in the month of June our billing system will automatically be issuing fines to consumers that have not achieved the required savings. Save for our staff reporting consumers that are in breach of the water restrictions we rely on the general public to report these to us and would appreciate if Mr Pexa could forward these as well.
We are aware that car washes could use large volumes of water and to this end many of them have already installed water recycling facilities to ensure that they utilise very little potable water for their operation. Other car washes have been provided until mid-July to install a recycling water facility or face closure.
