It was with absolute disgust and utter sadness that I read about the duiker that was savagely hunted, kicked and stoned by a 200 strong crowd of constructions workers at Ballito Junction.
What I feel I cannot even begin to describe. Culturally the norm or not, it is deplorable. I can only thank the worthy citizen James Mayer who intervened while these savages continued their ritual of utter disgrace, as well as to Dr Stevens at Ballito Vet who received this poor traumatised and wounded creature and attended to and saved it.
I feel very strongly that the construction company involved should be forced to pay a substantial fine for the inhumane actions of their workers as well as all medical bills incurred. I too feel that this same construction company should dig deep and make good to the Ballito Vet as well as the SPCA and wild life rehabilitation centres which have to deal with wounded animals, wounds caused by the hands and actions of humans. This same construction company should be held responsible and should be expected to make a public apology.
I sincerely hope that this unfortunate act of animal cruelty is accounted for and not just forgotten.
