How hard is today really going to be?
I believe that starting early is always the key
Waking up at 4, what is my first job of the day?
Carefully lighting a candle, so I can see my way
It’s pitch black in here and the taps have run dry
Best turn on the gas and set it real high.
Hot food and drink to give us warmth, is what I think
But the gas ran out on Tuesday, and there’s no water for the sink
Thank heavens for long life batteries, I can see to get by.
Lighting the mirror nicely, for me to fasten my tie
I start the long dark walk, over hard, rough ground.
I hope the skebengas are sleeping, and not hanging around
Trying to wash your legs in a small bowl by the sink.
Best to shower is at the gym, that what’s best think
Drag the water back, I must be getting old
Enough water to wash the kids, but they cry, as it’s so cold
Going to the toilet without flushing, really is a pain
Pouring down a bucket of water doesn’t quite feel the same
Time to hold your breath and be careful where you stand
Be as quick as you can, and NEVER look around
The drive to work is long, the traffic is a pain
At least the water crisis means I am not driving in rain
Long walk to the transport, my body feels so tired
Please don’t notice how I smell today, or I think I might get fired
Both crossing each other’s life, in each other’s space, the province of KZN is a beautifully complex place.
