Why on earth have Dolphin Striders picked December 20 for their 21km race, postponed from September 6?

Don’t they realize that this is the Sunday before Christmas when traffic in this town is already horrendous enough without adding more congestion and confusion?

Another point to be considered should be the athletes’ welfare. December being very hot and, invariably humid, is, surely not the ideal time to attempt outdoor, strenuous activity.

I have been associated with athletics, road running in particular in KZNA for many years having been chairman of Richards Bay AC for 14 years. I was, for 20 years, a race referee, officiating throughout the province at numerous events including the Comrades Marathon. I therefore feel suitably qualified to be critical in this instance.

Dolphin Coast Striders chairman Barry Holland replies:

Thank you for your concern about our race in December. There will be no traffic issues as the race starts and finishes at Holla Trails and goes out and back on the Isenembe road.

We are very aware of the possible heat and humidity at this time of the year and are planning an oversupply of water and coke at the watering points and finish.

I am not sure if you are still active in road running but would welcome your experience and expertise. It would be great to see you down at the club some time.
