I have to applaud and support G Dunn (Letters, November 13) for his suggestion regarding the setting of absolute water usage limits for each household.
It seems to me that the consumers in Ilembe and others are not aware of their water consumption or what actual water savings are expected. As Dunn points out, those consumers who last year were consuming 30+ kiloliters per month are only required to reduce to 15 kl per month. Not enough!
I lived in Amanzimtoti in the 1980’s drought and was restricted to 200 liters/day. Not easy but do-able. What is less easy is that the water supply will run out and becomes significantly less do-able.
I believe that the supply authority should implement this with immediate effect before it’s too late.
Guidance on the “how” of reading your meter should also be published to avoid the “don’t know” effect. This matter need to be taken seriously as holiday visitors are due. They are here for their annual “jol”, not to help us save water. This whole matter is most concerning given that the situation is getting worse with Hazelmere Dam now down to 25.8%.
Come on guys – we can do better and should do so for the common good.
