In the issue of November 13 it was stated that it is “very uncommon” to see a loggerhead on the Dolphin Coast, especially laying her eggs on Tinley Manor beach.
Then in your report in the same issue on the new drum lines being installed, it is noted that unfortunately a loggerhead turtle perished in the old nets off Salt Rock.
As they are very rare around here should one presume that it was the mother that had just laid her eggs?
Whatever the circumstances it is really sad that a rare visiting species should die such a cruel, horrible death and let us hope that with the new drum lines, she will be the last.
Let us hope that the nesting site will be protected and that the hatchlings will all make it back into the sea and hopefully survive in large numbers.
