Re your dig in the latest Courier at Zimbali parents i.e. that the recession is so bad they had to fire their nannies and learn their children’s names. I am a mother living in Zimbali and am usually happy to laugh along, but I found myself offended by the stereotype you cast in that somewhat personal joke.
It is this kind of (harmless?) humour that perpetuates negative generalisations. With the world becoming progressively more right wing and exclusionary, and among growing intolerance of the “other” (think Trump, harsh immigration policies, Brexit, xenophobia . . .), I’m not sure your joke is helpful. You had enough bullet points to perhaps leave that potentially hurtful one out.
Personally, I am intimately involved in the lives of my children and as soon as I find Thembi I’ll let you know who they are.
