Letter: Used and discarded

Tholamandla Majola of KwaDukuza is disappointed: In KwaDukuza we deaf people are still treated like in the apartheid days.

When the politicians want our votes they come and knock on our doors and provide us with transport, food and their organisation’s t-shirt.

After that we don’t hear from them. This is abhorrent because we are also human despite being deaf.

I have matric, a driver’s licence and a security certificate and I don’t know how many times I’ve been to apply for jobs at KwaDukuza municipality and Ilembe District Municipality without getting any position, even to pick up rubbish in the street.

I still believe Tata Nelson Mandela was the only and last president and leader who cared about disabled people. The leaders of today only care about their
positions and being famous.

Here in KwaDukuza we don’t have even a school for deaf people.

This municipality is said to be in the top five in KZN but they fail us a lot. I am sure next year we will see the leaders knock on our doors to tell us that we must go and vote for them.

We are capable of doing anything like all other humans. #STANDUPDEAFPEOPLE.
