Ann McDonnell, MPL, writes: It is a known fact that tourism is the best way in which to create jobs and improve our economy here in KwaZulu-Natal.
With this in mind, the Democratic Alliance welcomes the reported awarding of Blue Flag status to nine beaches within the province.
The Blue Flag programme sets standards that benefit the entire tourism industry. It also keeps local authorities performing when it comes to issues of cleanliness, particularly amenities such as ablution facilities.
Meanwhile, the perception of proper water safety and environmental good practice at our beaches is compelling to both foreign and up-country visitors.
In short, this achievement can only mean good news for KZN’s coffers and the DA congratulates WESSA and the Ethekwini and the Ray Nkonyeni Municipalities.
The challenge now is to roll out the Blue Flag programme all the way along our province’s coastline.
