Ravi Ronny, design planning and construction manager, Sanral Eastern Region writes: The article titled “Sanral passes the buck” (Courier, November 9) refers.
At the outset, it must be stated the headline is misleading.
It is not true that Sanral is responsible for traffic signals at Salt Rock.
Sanral has consistently stated the installation of traffic signals must be undertaken by the developer of Tiffany’s Shopping Centre.
As far back as 2008 when Sanral approved of the development, an explicit condition was that the developer install traffic signals at the interchange and at their access off MR330.
This condition was also submitted to KwaDukuza municipality which holds responsibility for operation and maintenance of traffic signals.
At a meeting with municipal officials and local businesses on November 2, 2018, a representative of the developer confirmed that following a traffic impact assessment carried out in 2007, the developer had committed to installation of traffic signals.
Sanral also denies receipt of any approval request within the last seven years from the developer in the area as stated in the article.
The developer has agreed to proceed with the design and installation of the traffic signals as a matter of urgency.
