Nicola Bruyns is concerned about drinking on the beach: What a beautiful place we live in! It looks like Ballito is getting itself ready for the tourists to descend upon us, and a walk along the promenade confirmed that they will be making a great decision to spend their holidays here.
There was however one big negative that my family and I experienced as we walked past the Ballito tidal pool near Gianni’s.
There were many people openly drinking alcohol and several appeared to be inebriated already, even though it was only 11am on a Sunday morning.
As we walked back up to the parking near Gianni’s, we encountered people carrying cases (not six packs) of beer and bottles of whiskey or brandy down from the parking lot and people arriving already drunk!
As a tourist this would not be a pleasant experience to have on a lovely, hot Sunday morning and also could lead to drownings and crime.
Certainly not an experience that a family would want to have!
My understanding is that the municipal by-laws do not allow drinking in public places and this is now being strictly enforced in places like the Durban beachfront.
Why is there therefore no enforcement by SAPS of these by-laws?
Proper enforcement will go a long way to giving tourists and residents alike a wonderful experience, without allowing a few law-breakers to ruin it for everybody
