Referring to your article “Strict burning rules” (Courier, July 12), when the sugar cane farming and burning of sugar cane started some 150 years ago there was almost no one living at the coast. Meanwhile the population and with it the developments have increased drastically. Therefore the “old fashioned” way of burning sugar cane should be finally stopped.
There are two reasons. One is the increased air pollution due to sugar cane burning (I am not saying you are the only reason for the air pollution, but you are definitely contributing to it a lot) and then the “black snow” is another issue people have to deal with daily on their patios, swimming pools etc.
Cane leaves could be an extra source to produce more energy or as cellulosic ethanol.
The second reason is – and I really wonder if ever a thought has been given – did anyone ever think about the thousands of animals grilled alive!
Not only buck and snakes (snakes whom we desperately need to control the rodent population!), but also little creatures like small turtles, chameleons, beetles etc. who have no chance to escape the inferno!
