The recent storms have brought about mixed emotions. We are thankful for the much needed rain in a country which is becoming ever more water scarce.
It was with great sadness that we heard about the tragic loss of life in Soweto area, Darnall, and we applaud the brave rescuers from KDM, IPSS and all involved in the search and rescue operation. Our condolences go to the family.
I would like to thank residents for their patience during the electrical outages, and accolades should be given to the electricians who have worked under extremely trying conditions.
Extreme weather patterns are becoming a reality worldwide, and must be factored into municipal planning. This must include urgent upgrades to both electrical, roads and storm water infrastructure, along with a solid workable and ongoing maintenance plan.
To complement this, a comprehensive disaster management plan must be adopted and be published to the public at large. This should be a priority for a municipality with a vision to be a city in 2030.
